A few of us recently mentioned having a site to collect Wong family photos, and I decided to throw something together to get the ball rolling.
Here’s the url: http://wongfamily.homeip.net
This is my web server, but the files can be moved later. Also, do we want to restrict access — require a password to see the site?
Please take a look at it, ignore the graphics — we can get some designers in the family to change it later — but see if the structure works for our needs (and that should probably be defined.)
The main page has a link for each member of that generation which takes you to their homepage —- I put up sample photos for the “Horace and Marie” button. To begin with, I can set up scripts to take a folder of images from each family and automatically generate a similar webpage (maybe think how to implement captions.) I can also set up links so each family can update that folder themselves (we could use subfolders as a way to categorize the photos, too.)
My thoughts, at least initially, was just to collect our favorite family photos in one place. My generation, all getting older and nostalgic, would love to see images of our uncles and aunts when they were younger; also it would be nice to see family portraits, and maybe pix of people doing what they enjoy most. So maybe a few dozen — not hundreds — for each family to begin with (and make it doable), and just a simple page of images. Are slideshows, thumbnails, image carousels wanted? It would be a nice diversion for me to figure out how to do those.
I appreciate knowing if this works, what I’m missing, and if this is worth doing or do we want to use a commercial solution. I sent this to a random list of relatives, so please feel free to pass this on to others who might be interested for their thoughts.
Also, Sandy, I updated the Quan Doe family tree with info from Jim; please tell me if there are corrections needed. My intent was to keep this version simple, showing current relationships at a glance and not worrying about dates or prior history.
Jim, I played around with css to make your larger genealogy zoomable and panable; there are some issues with some browsers with the current solution (too small to begin, too big a zoom step, etc.), but it actually works pretty well with touch on phones and tablets.
